WEEK IN REVIEW
Veterans Day
On Monday we started out the week with a Veteran's Day Ceremony. It was beautifully done by members of the armed forces and Mrs. Lee.The students sang patriotic songs led by Mrs. Wood, two 4th grade students read their Veteran's Day Essays, Taps was played by a member of the High School band which was followed by a moment of silence for those who have served and are currently serving our great nation.
When we got back to the classroom, I had the students write "Thank You" notes to the National Guard Armory here in Hayward. The students really did a great job with his. They were very respectful and understanding. I sent the "Thank Yous" to the Armory this week.
Math
In Math we have finished out Unit #2--Multiplication. The students had a review they completed today. They are to take this home and study the material for the test tomorrow (FRIDAY). We will start fresh with Unit #3 on Monday--Division.
English Language Arts
In ELA we are continuing with our Long Winter book written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. It is apart of a sequence of books called Little House on the Prairie. The students seem to be enjoying the book so far. We continue to do DOL every day and the REWARDS program. We have also began doing a Word of The Day to build some vocabulary skills.
Book Clubs
Mrs. Marienfeld and I have also organized book clubs for our students. We have take students from each of our classrooms and grouped them according to ability (STAR Reading Score). Within these groups they had a chance to choose a book too read that interested them. Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday these book clubs meet. The students read a chapter or two a day while also doing vocabulary work, dialogue journals, making connections and learning about parts of a story. At the end of the Quarter the students will be responsible for making a cereal box diagram of the story using the parts of the story (i.e. characters, setting, problem, solution ,etc.). We just started this project this week.
Pioneer Life
Also, because The Long Winter deals with pioneer life the 4th grade has decided to do a little history lesson about pioneer life. The students will be completing a web quest, making a poster and doing an at home project that has them going back in time. This project is to be done over Thanksgiving break. Please look for a letter home from the 4th grade team sometime next week.
Other Information
This week we really started working on manners. I am emphasizing the importance of using excuse me, thank you, please, no thank you, etc. Manners are very important in my classroom and in life. If you could remind your students of this that would be wonderful.
THANKS, PARENTS
Thank you! One more week until Thanksgiving Break--a well deserved break I might add.
Thank you for all you do as parents. I am truly very appreciative to be working with such an excellent group of parents. :)
