Exciting News

It is with great pleasure that we finally announce the new addition to the 4th grade team. We have hired Mrs. Lisa Johnson. She has 10 years of experience teaching and is returning to Hayward from Sioux Falls, SD. She has a true passion for teaching and is very dedicated to student learning. Please stop by her classroom on 10/1 from 4pm-7pm and welcome her to the HIS! We are very happy to have her with us on the Fantastic Fourth Grade Team! :)

Happy Weekend

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. The weather should be fabulous, so please enjoy it! Please remember that conferences are on Monday 9/29 and Wednesday 10/1. Double check your time to ensure it works for you. I am excited to see all of you!

LIME GREEN SHEET

THIS IS A REMINDER THAT THE LIME GREEN SHEET YOUR STUDENT BROUGHT HOME MUST BE TURNED IN BY OCTOBER 10TH. IF YOU OR YOUR STUDENT HAS LOST THIS SHEET PLEASE LET ME KNOW AND I WILL GET YOU A NEW ONE. EVERY FAMILY MUST FILL THIS OUT IN ORDER TO RECEIVE IMPACT AID FOR THE SCHOOL. THANKS!

Assignment Notebooks TONIGHT ONLY!

I have told the students that they do not have to fill out their assignment notebooks tonight due to the fact that I did not make copies for more pages in their assignment notebooks. Oops! The day got away from me. I will have these copies with me tomorrow. Please do remind your students to please study their Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing packet for the test TOMORROW!!! They should also do their math sheet 1-9 if they did not finish that. Thank you!

Conference Times

By now you should have gotten a white sheet that tells you the time of your child's parent/teacher conferences.  These will either take place 9/29 or 10/1 from 4-7pm. Please write this important date on your calendar. I will try my hardest to stick to the schedule as it is very tight this year and having only 15 minutes to talk we will have to do it quickly. I can keep this promise with some help from you as well. Please be on time, please be ready with questions or concerns, and please set up a time with me prior to the conferences or after the  conferences if you have something bigger to talk about or would like to talk longer than the given times for the conferences. I am available in the mornings (7:45-8:00) by phone, email or in person and the same goes for the afternoon (3:15-4:00). I also have prep every day at 10:00am and can usually be found in my room. Thank you for your help and cooperation in this matter. :)

Lime Green Sheet

There was a lime green sheet sent home for Impact Aid. Please fill this out as best you can have your student return it to me or the office no later than October 10th, 2014.

School is Cool :)

What's going on in room 406!?  Good Afternoon Families, It has been a busy, busy 4 weeks here in fourth grade. We have hit the ground running with all of our academics. Below you will find an update on math, ELA, and writing.  In math we are working through the Unit #1 dealing with place value, adding and subtracting to the millions place. I will be sending home a parent letter which will show you the different strategies we are learning. Please look for that in your child's blue assignment notebook/folder. It should help with any questions or  concerns your or your child are having.  Each unit comes with quick quizzes that are to be administered at certain points of the chapters. These quizzes are 5 questions (not totally 5 points) and are a quick snap shot of your student of how they are doing with the material thus far. These quick quizzes are graded. We have had two so far of the three that need to be taken in Chapter #1.  In ELA we have...

When I say Hayward, you say Hurricanes!

Hurricane Homecoming Week is coming to an end tomorrow, but it won't be leaving without a bang! There will be a parade starting behind the HIS and going down 5th Street to Main Street starting at 2:30pm. We, as a school, will be watching from the sidewalk on 5th Street. Then at 7:00pm there will be the kick-off to the Hurricane Homecoming Football Game. We are up against the Ladysmith Lumberjacks. It should be an awesome game, so I hope we can see you all there. :) Also, PLEASE remind your student to wear BLACK & GOLD TOMORROW to help support the Hurricanes. If your student does not have any school colors, please have them come to me and we will figure something out for them.  Happy Homecoming Week!!

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Your student was sent home with a GREEN conference sheet today. Please take a moment and fill this out and send it back to school as soon as you possibly can. I am now becoming aware that I have a lot of students who have siblings in the lower grades. I have been in contact with their teachers and we will work together to make the conferences times as feasible as we can. But, please be understanding if there is for some reason a chance that your children's conferences are either not scheduled on the same day or are more than 15-20 minutes apart on the same day. We are trying our best. Thank you for this cooperation. :)

Homecoming Events

This week, as many of you may know, is Homecoming Week for the Hayward Hurricanes. We, here at the HIS, will be partaking in a few Homecoming festivities. Our PAC is graciously building a float for us to be represented in the parade with. On Friday, September 19th at 9:00 the HIS will hold their own Homecoming Pep-Rally where members of the HHS band, choir and sports teams will join us in cheering the Hurricane Football Team on towards a WIN Friday night (game at 7pm at the football field behind the High School). Also, we will be out on 5th Street watching the Homecoming Parade at 2:00pm.

Homecoming Sales

This is a reminder that the Canes Pro Shop will be selling beads and tattoos in honor of Homecoming Week. The beads will be $2.00 and the tattoos will be $1.00. If your child is interested in buying these items they will be for sale at 7:45am tomorrow until Friday. Thank you!

Remembering 9/11

Today in class we did a craft-tivity dealing with September 11th. It amazes me the knowledge the students have about this tragic event even given the fact that they were not even born at the time of the attack. We watched a short video, had a great discussion and made an art project. The students really seemed to enjoy it. :) Henry was so kind to model his project for us.

Wow! What a morning!!

Hi! I would like to thank each and everyone of you as parents/guardians for being so patient and understanding this morning. The weather that we had sent the schools for quite a loop, but with the help of Paul and the bus company, Mr. Olson, Mrs. Lee and many others we got it all handled and we are proud to say that all of our students were safe and sound. Thank you for your help! It really makes it a lot easier when a tragedy or an emergency like this happens and we can all work together for the common good..which is OUR KIDS! We truly appreciate it all. Please also thank and make sure you tell your students what a great job they did. It was amazing to see the respect, responsibility and safety that each student had during this crazy time. They did such a great job and you should be very proud. :)

First Day of School!

What a crew!!
